Jews United Challenges St Thomas’ Hospital Over Refusal of Sukkah and Jewish Patient Provision
September–October 2026 | London | NHS Accountability and Religious Freedom
Jews United challenged Guy’s and St Thomas’ NHS Foundation Trust following its refusal to permit a sukkah for Jewish patients, visitors and staff during Sukkot.
In a written response dated 25 September 2026, the Trust confirmed that it had considered the request but refused it because of concerns that protests and demonstrations near its Westminster location could make it difficult to protect patients, staff and visitors from religious discrimination and hatred.
Jews United challenged the decision, questioning why the risk of antisemitism should result in restrictions on Jewish religious observance rather than appropriate protective measures.
Our engagement subsequently exposed wider concerns regarding access to kosher food, Shabbos facilities, Jewish chaplaincy provision and cooperation with community volunteers.
Jews United gathered testimony from six families and four patients, alongside written evidence, and pursued a formal complaint with the Trust's Patient Resolution team.
Patients and families expressed concerns about disclosing their identities for fear that doing so might affect their care. Jews United therefore requested an investigation into the wider service arrangements while protecting patient confidentiality.
Our continuing objectives are to secure appropriate religious facilities, improve access to kosher food and Shabbos provision, and ensure that Jewish patients receive dignified, culturally appropriate care.
