Challenging Inadequate Facilities for Jewish Patients at Homerton Hospital

Homerton University Hospital serves one of London's largest Orthodox Jewish communities, including substantial numbers of Jewish patients and staff who rely on access to appropriate religious facilities and services.

Jews United has been approached by Jewish patients and community members raising serious concerns about the inadequate conditions and lack of suitable facilities for observing Shabbos and accessing kosher food and refreshments.

The existing Shabbos facility is housed in an external portacabin, approximately ten minutes' walk from the nearest hospital exit. Concerns include a leaking roof, exposure to adverse weather and the difficulties faced by patients and visitors, particularly during darkness, cold weather and periods of ill health.

Despite the identification of a potentially suitable internal space within the hospital, questions remain about why this alternative has not been properly considered.

Jews United has pursued Freedom of Information requests examining the hospital's allocation of space, internal decision-making procedures and consideration of religious accommodation.

We believe that patients' religious needs, dignity and wellbeing must be given proper consideration, particularly by an NHS trust serving such a significant Jewish population.

Our objective is to secure transparency, accountability and practical improvements that ensure Jewish patients and staff have access to safe, dignified and appropriate religious facilities within the hospital.
